2nd prize in Crowthorne Carnival

Did you see the dozen beautiful mermaids swimming down the High Street, or that group of cool surfer dudes, or the fisherman, or those octopuses walking down on Saturday?  You did!  Well they must have been part of the 80+ team from Wildmoor Heath School taking part in the Carnival!

What a result!  We can proudly say that Wildmoor Heath won 2nd place under the schools category for best float at the procession on Saturday!  So, together with our beautiful Carnival Princess, Millie Crocker, and more than 70 children, lots of teachers and parents on the float and walking behind, you can say we had a really wild day!

Did you know that for the last 6 weeks there has been fish swimming, octopuses growing tentacles, waves crashing against the shore and seaweed growing, all within the confines of the School Hall!!!

Wildmoor Heath School has been very busy creating the “Rhythm of Ocean Life” float for the Crowthorne Carnival.  We’ve had Mrs Hayter and her team of teachers & parents at the Carnival Club, Miss Goswell and the Art & Craft Club, the Carnival Committee and finally lots and lots of children aged 0-11 all working together to form the most amazing vision of ocean life you could ever ask for.

As with all these school achievements there are always special thank you’s to make to those people who went that extra mile – or indeed a mini marathon – to help make the children’s day so special.  Mrs Hayter and Mrs Cotterill led a very supportive group of teaching staff who helped not only on the night before, or even on the day, but also in the preceding weeks allowing rocks and seaweed to “grow & creep” over the school in a bid to ensure there was enough to cover the float.  In addition to Mrs Hayter & Mrs Cotterill, special thanks must go to the Carnival Committee including Mrs Rodgers, Mrs Ross, Mr Reynolds, Mr Johnson and Mrs Ladd-Thomas (all parents) who gave up their time on some cold, wet and winter evenings to come up with the creative ideas in the first place.  Another thank you goes to Mr Payne for his DIY skills and very hard work used to create the boat and lighthouse which finished the float perfectly.  In addition to all those who have already been mentioned, another thank you goes to Mr Castle and Mr Brett who assisted all the previously mentioned teachers and parents with the Saturday morning early float preparation team.

Our final thank you goes to Mr Talbot and Travis Perkins without whom there would have been no float.  The School is very appreciative of Travis Perkins and their support and commitment to us, providing a super size lorry, that allowed lots of the younger children to take part and not be totally exhausted by the long walk, as well as allowing us to show off the talented creative skills that the School family helped to create.

Another big part of Saturday’s carnival fun was that the WHPTA had 2 stalls at the Carnival Fair after the procession.  So along with the Float team, the Fair team were up bright and early on Saturday morning, putting up the gazebo’s (special thanks to Mr Hart for the loan of his work’s gazebo.), setting up the bottle tombola and folding more than 900 raffle tickets!  The lollipop game was setup and made ready, the beautiful Wildmoor Heath sign (special thanks to Miss Wilson) was put up (a couple of times due to heavy gusts of wind and not enough “gaffa” tape!!) and the 2 stalls were ready for business!

Thank you so much to all those parents who took a turn on the “rota” and sold tickets and lollipops like seasoned professionals!  We sold out of the bottle tombola by 3pm and the lolly game did a roaring trade right till pack-up time!

The brilliant end to the stalls was that we made approximately £240 profit, which was entirely down to the generous donations by parents, of bottles and lollipops, so thank you to everyone who donated, you really made a difference!

Just imagine what we can achieve at the next Crowthorne Carnival in 2012!!!
